I bought this book with some hope for a book about love/emotions/communication but boy was I wrong. The snippets of info are very vague and are not at all helpful. Some are offensive. The picture are nice but that’s it.
I bought the book in a bookstore and then came online to see what other people thought on Amazon. One review is from Dr. Laura’s husband (Sam Chapman, who describes himself as her “publicist”) and the other review is probably from him, too, because if you click on it, you can see that every other review that the”happy husband” has written are for his own book (again, Sam Chapman’s book!) and for Dr. Laura’s books and sex toys and they all have embedded links trying to get people to buy his product. What a sham!!! And how embarrassing for them. I am surprised that Amazon has let these reviews from her husband stay online.

This is a practical guide for couples, both male and female friendly. GLBT too! I love Dr. Berman!

THE PROS:
I had previously read “Real Sex for Real Women” and was not impressed AT ALL so I was reluctant to give “The Book of Love” a try. However it was good! I liked the photographs of the couples of different ages and different body types that were better than other sex/relationship books I have seen. I also liked the many different tips. Many didn’t appeal to me but some did and I think many couples would feel this way – it’s a “take what you want” approach.
The CONS:
I thought a lot of the advice was too “short & sweet”. It didn’t go into much detail and would say things like not to be jealous or to appreciate each other, etc without really telling readers HOW to do these things. That is my only complaint that it read more like a magazine than a helpful book. And I wanted a helpful book! Not a gloss-over.
ON BALANCE:
I read this book only a couple of months after I read “Because It Feels Good” which is a sex/relationship book that I totally loved and that changed my relationship and sex life for the better, got me to try sex toys and to be more sensuous in the bedroom and more receptive to sex in a good way. So I guess “The Book of Love” had some pretty steep competition and my reaction may be biased because of that! But they are both good books for different reasons and I recommend either one because of this.
